Budget 2027 – Inheritance Tax

John A Sinnott Solicitors, Inheritance Tax

The rate of inheritance tax, also called Capital Acquisitions Tax (CAT) hasn’t changed in the recent Budget and is charged at 33% on anything you receive above your lifetime tax-free threshold.

All three tax-free thresholds were increased for gifts and inheritances received on or after 7th of October 2026:

  • Group A (child inheriting from a parent): €420,000, up from €400,000
  • Group B (e.g. grandchild, brother, sister, niece, nephew): €44,000, up from €40,000
  • Group C (anyone else, such as a friend or cousin): €22,000, up from €20,000

Inheritance tax is not applicable to inheritance from a spouse.
