Stay Safe Online Shopping with New Website Checker

John A Sinnott Solicitors, online shopping

Fraud and scams are something we are all familiar with, especially when it comes to online shopping. Online scams can include counterfeit websites, built with the intention of stealing your personal and financial details, or phishing attacks. Staying vigilant and taking precautions when online shopping is something we all try to do, but there is a new instrument that can help us one bit further.

We recommend using a new security tool that was developed by Munster Technological University Cyber Skills in cooperation with Scam Adviser and An Garda Síochána called ‘CheckMyLink’. Visit check.cyberskills.ie.

The aim of ‘CheckMyLink’ is to verify if the website you are shopping from is legit and malware-free. It is also user-friendly; all you have to do is key in the website’s URL and you will be informed if it is legitimate and safe for you to continue shopping there.

With the Christmas season approaching and other cyber-sale events, such as Black Friday, we urge everybody to stay alert, especially throughout this time. During such sale events, it is not uncommon that links to fake websites are spread, where your sensitive information, such as passwords or credit card details, is stolen. Remember if it is too good to be true, then it just might be too good to be true! Stay safe.
