Summertime and the Living is Easy!

The August bank holiday weekend is approaching and we are all looking forward to some rest and relaxation.  If you’re driving this weekend, the roads are sure to be busy and so extra care and attention is needed.  Here is a reminder some of the basic regulations we must adhere to, to help us say safe on the roads.

  • Be aware of, and have consideration for, drivers displaying L-plates and N-plates.  An L-plate signifies that the driver is a learner driver.  An N-plate signifies that the driver has recently passed the driving test.  N-plates must be displayed for two years after passing the driving test.
  • Learner drivers, remember you must be accompanied in the car by a person who has held a full driving licence for a continuous period of at least two years.
  • As a driver, you must keep your licence in the car with you to present to Gardaí if required.
  • Slow down.  Speed is still the number one cause of accidents on our roads.
  • Never drink and drive.  A driver who is found to be over the limit will now face an automatic driving ban for three months and a fine of €200.
  • Never take drugs and drive.  Remember drug testing can now be conducted on the roadside too.
  • Don’t hold or use a mobile phone when driving.
  • Always wear your seatbelt and ensure all passengers do too.
  • Ensure children are properly belted into seats appropriate for their age.
  • Make sure your car is safe and roadworthy by regular servicing and display a valid NCT certificate if required.
  • Drive with care and be aware of other road users i.e. cyclists and pedestrians
